Minimalist Portrait Backgrounds
A minimalist background portrait is perfect for many images, including portrait photos, maternity photos, family photos, fashion photos, child photos, product photos, and more.
Choosing a good background is one of the most important parts of good portrait photography. The right background for a portrait can not only make your subject look good, but it can also let you play around with the tone, and mood to create your own style.
What makes a minimalist image?
There are as many interpretations of minimalist photos as there are many explanations. Mainly, it is about attracting the viewer’s focus to the main subject, minimalist images typically use a small number of specially selected lines, colors, and shapes in combination with negative space.
If you don’t know where to begin with minimalist photography, educate yourself with the style and some contemporary minimalist photographers. Michael Kenna, Andreas Gursky, and Fan Ho are just a few well-known photographers whose work exemplifies the minimalist aesthetic.
The Idea – Less is more
Despite the fact that the maxim “less is more” may be oversimplified, minimalist photography typically focuses on a single subject. The supporting elements of the picture should support or bring attention to the main subject.
Perhaps the most challenging component of minimalist photography is determining what to add to your image. If a scene contains several intriguing elements, such as an animal, a plant, and a house, you must decide which ones to include and which to omit. It’s best to avoid distractions while you are still taking pictures by shifting around or adjusting your angle, even though it is occasionally possible to crop them out of the image after the fact.
Colors, patterns, and textures as backgrounds are powerful
Additionally useful elements in minimalist photography are hues, textures, and patterns. The few colors, patterns, and textures that are present will enhance or add contrast in some way since a minimalist photo typically only has two or three of these elements.

How to use the Backgrounds in Photoshop
- Open your original image and process it any way you like. Once done, flatten the image.
- Add the background image as a new layer above your original image and change the blend mode for the background layer to Overlay or Soft Light.
- You can also try other blend modes like Darken, Multiply, Color Burn, Darker Color, Lighten, Screen, Color Dodge, Lighter Color, Overlay, Soft Light, Hard Light, Difference, Exclusion, Hue, Saturation, Color, and Luminosity
- You can also experiment with the opacity of the background layer or add several other adjustment layers till you are satisfied with the result.
- Add a layer mask to the background layer and use a brush to mask the background from your subject.
Why is the background of a picture so important?
The background sets the tone for the rest of your composition. A good background will add to the story, tell you important things about your setting, and make your photo look much better. You should pay just as much attention to the background as you do to the subject.
How should a good background look?
You want it to be clutter-free and tidy enough so that readers can concentrate fully on your subject. Go for a background with a limited number of colors and patterns. This contrast between your model and their surroundings visually enhances the cleanliness of the scene.
How to select a color for the background?
When thinking of background ideas, ensure that the color of the background goes well with the color of your subject’s skin and clothes instead of drawing attention away from them. Color theory is a big part of what I do, and it’s important for photographers to understand it.
